On this tour we visit the deserted inland of Iceland. We follow the river Þjórsá in the direction of Mount Hekla, a stratovolcano with a height of 1491 meters, which erupts on average every 10 years. In the Middle Ages, the Icelandic volcano was thought that the entrance to Hell, as it caused the farmers around so much trouble.
Along the way, the landscape offers some stunning views. You will feel like at the beginning of the world, or the end. We continue our journey through the land of “Trolls” to the heart of Landmannalaugar known for its wonderful variety of colors, craters, thick and impressive lava flows and hot springs – bring your swimsuit if you want swimming in nature! Showers, toilets and changing rooms are available, at a small extra fee.
Picnic lunch. Opportunity to open a high mountain chalet in case of bad weather. Walk about an hour after scheduled lunch, if time permits. We ascend the slopes of the crater Víti – or Hell in English – now filled with water. From the heights of the crater, the view is breathtaking throughout the natural reserve. Each view is competing with the next for the title of most beautiful landscape … the choice is yours!
Nature deciding for a large part of our program, this itinerary may be slightly altered depending on weather conditions. En route there we drive through Thjorsardalur valley, with its stunningly diverse and colourful landscapes, and visit a reconstructed medieval farmhouse, and the beautiful Hjalparfoss waterfall.

Landmannalaugar is a true treasure when it comes to geology, hiking, and experiencing nature. There will be colourful mountains, steam coming from the earth, hot springs you can bathe in, a whole lot of rugged lava-field landscape. You’ll find yourself wondering how and if anything could possibly grow up here, and just then, you’ll be greeted with the greenest neon green moss you’ll ever lay eyes on, and little pink flowers that seem to grow from nothing. If you are not a environmentalist already you will become one after visiting this beautiful area.
